Around 30k people live in this small town. Gizycko is being developed every year, from every perspective to make it the most important tourist attraction place in Poland for foreigners. I, particularly, love the infrastructure of this stunning city.

What is the Historical Significance of Gizycko?
Giżycko, originally founded as a Teutonic Order stronghold in the late 14th century and known as Lötzen, is located in the picturesque Masurian Lake District. The town served as an important military and trading post during the medieval era. After the Thirteen Years’ War, it came under Polish influence but later became part of East Prussia.
In the 19th century, Lötzen modernized and became a popular tourist destination. World War II brought significant changes, with the town heavily affected by the conflict. After the war, the region was incorporated into Poland, and Lötzen was renamed Giżycko to honor Gustaw Gizewiusz, a notable Polish linguist and cultural activist.
Today, Giżycko is a vibrant town known for its beautiful lakes, rich history, and cultural heritage. A significant number of people come to this city during the summer especially. In the summer, this city gets exponentially busy with numerous people in central Gizycko. So many open bars take place on the beach, whole the nights stay vibrant and busy with people.
Boyen Fortress
During my visit, I spent an afternoon exploring the Boyen Fortress, a 19th-century Prussian fortification. The well-preserved walls and tunnels were fascinating, and the museum offered a deep dive into the region’s military history. The annual Boyen Fortress Days, featuring reenactments and performances, brought history to life in a way that was both educational and entertaining.

Enjoy Water Sports
Giżycko is perfectly situated between Lake Niegocin and Lake Kisajno, making it a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. You can rent a sailboat, kayak, or paddleboard and explore the pristine waters. I spent a blissful day sailing on Lake Niegocin, with the Great Masurian Lakes Trail offering a scenic and peaceful route.
You can get all the information about how to book the boats and all the stuff once you go to the boat section on the beach. The price varies according to the facilities of the boats and the size they offer. However, the majority of them are very reasonable and cheap. You must try this unforgettable journey if you visit Poland and should stay a night on a boat with your friends or family.
Hiking and Nature Walks
The surrounding landscapes are ideal for hiking and nature walks. The Masurian Landscape Park, located nearby, is a protected area that offers beautiful trails, wildlife spotting, and serene views. Hiking through the park, I was captivated by the tranquility and the opportunity to see a variety of birds and wildlife.
Attend Local Festivals
Giżycko hosts several annual events, including the Giżycko Water Sports Festival, which features regattas, concerts, and fireworks. These events provide a great opportunity to experience local culture and traditions. I was lucky to be there during the festival, and the vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals made it a memorable experience. July is the best month to visit Gizycko if you want to experience many of them. Because, from July summer vacation starts officially all over Poland for three months. Between these months most of the festivals are held. One of the most popular festivals is called the Hip-Hop Festival and it lasts for three days all day and night, live concerts are held during this time.
What is the Local Cuisine Like?
The local cuisine in Giżycko is a delightful blend of German, Lithuanian, and Polish influences. Traditional Masurian dishes include freshwater fish, wild game, and hearty soups. Dining at a local restaurant, I indulged in freshly caught fish from the lakes and a delicious wild game stew. The flavors were rich and comforting, making each meal a highlight of my trip. Don’t miss trying pierogi (dumplings), bigos (hunter’s stew), and the ever-popular Zapiekanka (open-faced toasted sandwich). Zapiekanka can be found in every Orlen which is a gas and petrol station.
Where to Stay in Gizycko?
Giżycko offers a range of accommodations to suit different budgets and preferences. From cozy guesthouses with stunning lake views to modern hotels with all the amenities, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. There are many three-star hotels that are very cheap compared to the facilities that you will get. I stayed at a charming guesthouse overlooking Lake Niegocin, which provided a peaceful retreat and easy access to the town’s main attractions. The town’s marina is one of the largest in Poland, providing excellent facilities for sailors. The price is also very cheap starting from $54 with a stunning view of the lake and closer to nature.
